Welcome to those of you who this year have entered Home Brewed for the first time and also in time for this year's Earlybird deadline which expired on 21 April - if you're receiving What's Brewing for the first time, then rest assured we have received your entry safe and sound!

Thank you also to our repeat entrants and previous email subscribers who have made the move this year. It's fantastic to see such a broad range of films at this early stage, and we look forward to hearing from the rest of you soon to contribute to what is shaping up to be the best festival in Home Brewed's history.

A reminder that the prize money in 2006 includes $5,000 cash for the film judged as Best Short Film in each of our <10 minute and 10-30 minute short film categories. As always, an independent judging panel will be reviewing shortlisted films to award the cash, and we will be announcing some of our exciting panellists in the next couple of months.

Don't forget that while our preferred entry method this year is through Withoutabox (click on the image at the right to get things underway) we still have the good old "print it out and fill it in" option on our home page www.homebrewedfilm.com

A few key points to remember when making your short film for Home Brewed or any other festival, or arranging a public screening of your film (these are specific to Australia but many apply world-wide):

  • You must have formal permission or a licence to use any music, sounds or images in your film, that you did not produce yourself.
  • Many landmarks (for example the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House in Sydney) cannot be used in films without paying a fee or obtaining a licence.
  • Films cannot be screened in Australia to a public audience, unless they have been rated by the Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC), or an exemption from rating has been obtained. For example, Home Brewed has to provide a full treatment of every film it screens to the OFLC, at least 6 weeks before our festival screenings.
